Renault 5 gains more range and clever tech in mid-life update

The Renault 5 E-Tech has been treated to a series of efficiency, technology and spec upgrades for the 2027 model year, with order books opening from 22 September 2026.

Updates to the popular electric supermini were detailed for European markets in August, but the details on changes to the UK cars have been announced today.

Subtle tweaks to the aerodynamics and battery tech mean the 5 can go just that little bit further. The entry-level 40kWh Urban Range now has up to 197-miles (WLTP), while the 52kWh Comfort Range can go up to 259-miles (WLTP).

Intriguingly though, it now comes with - what is effectively - an automatic drive mode select system. This new 'SmartMode' feature automatically switches between Eco, Comfort and Sport modes according to driving conditions. However, drivers still have the option to select these modes manually via the touchscreen or voice commands.

Technology upgrades include a cooled Qi2 magnetic wireless smartphone charger, designed to reduce overheating while restoring up to 50% of a compatible phone’s battery in an hour. It also gains 4G/5G-compatible eCall and Google Gemini AI, available through an optional over-the-air update.

Renault is also expanding its colour palette, with Flame Red and Shadow Grey paint colours, new sticker packs and revised interior upholstery joining the options list later this year.

The Renault 5 has incremental improvements all-round, yet pricing hasn't changed. It continues to start from £21,495 and the 52kWh version remains eligible for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant.
